Onslaught (My next free FPS) goes through Development Hell…

Ok… So I’ve been working on Onslaught, a free FPS Game, based on an idea for a game me and a friend (lets just call him hitman213) came up with in 1995. The premise is that you are some badass mercenary with cybernetic abilities (thin super powers) and you have to stop a mad cult from destroying what is left of the world when they plunge the world into a post apocalyptic hell hole.

Anyway, I worked on Onslaught some more today. I added in a lot more gore (it is gory as hell now), some new one liners and did some major fixing of serious bugs that crept in when I tried to make it so killing x amount of enemies would upgrade (lower) the duration you had to wait before using cyborg powers again after using them once. It didn’t really work well.. In fact it totally broke one cyborg power, the most useful one! The one you cannot beat the game without using a ton : Forcefield.

Forecefield makes you invincible for 30 seconds. But it fucked up with the upgrade set up and simply would not work again after triggering it once. It came to a situation where the game was teetering on entering development hell. I ended up scrapping the upgrade system and made it so the powers have a set duration that never changes. And that didn’t fix it. But messing with the scripting actually did eventually fix it so it’s shit luck that this game is still alive now.

I would like to set up an upgrade system but the thing is that I cannot guarantee forcefield can actually work. I think the previous incarnation of onslaught (only known as vicious onslaught) had the same issue but that one actually didn’t mess up gameplay because the game was easier back then than it is now. So I really don’t think I can get away with this system. It sucks. But at least it’s beatable now.

Anyway.. here are some new screenshots…
