Onslaught, My video game that I am currently working on was based on an Idea built by me and a friend, who I will only call Hitman213. It was a huge undertaking that lasted 6 years from 1996-2002. We fleshed out tons of ideas for this game and were going to give it to a company in 1999-2002.
Our main villian Damian was a normal madman at this point, responsible for the bombings and mutations the CSC villains unleashed on the post apocalyptic wasteland that the game took place in. But he changed. He was soon changed to be a demon in a human body. This change was prompted in the final stages in the game, which were finally fleshed out by 1997. You were brought to antarctica, to board a ship which gave you access to an undersea base that connected to a secret lair the CSC had near Washington DC, which was a smoldering ruin, after they nuked it in the story. The only way to reach this base was by boat in Antarctica. You connected to the lair and in the final stage, you fought damian but he soon revealed that he was a demon in a human body and no one could stop him. He opened a portal to hell and escaped. You followed him through to fight him on his own terrain and ran into demons that only existed there… The final fight was in hell in the game and there it ended..
By 1999 the game changed to be more horror oriented. Demons were introduced as enemies in the later stages which were between the USA portion and the Final Stage which started at Antarctica. You could not kill these demons with normal weapons you needed magical weapons to do so, so the magical weapons, which were reserved for hell only, were added in earlier in the game to compensate for this change…
The Mutants were soon redesigned to be scarier. I don’t remember much about this but all I remember is that they soon started to act scarier than they used to act in earlier renditions of the design document. One in particular would wait behind doors to scare you.
The Game soon expanded into Europe.. Key to this expansion was a set of 2 levels that featured horror elements in them. The first is the most scary idea for a level this thing had, enter what might be the scariest entity in Paranormal folklore, the Owlman of Mawnan. This horrific bird like phantom, with it’s evil grimace and red eyes, was seen a lot in england in the 1970’s and 80’s, supposedly. Well that story soon became something that influenced Onslaught. You were to actually fight the Owlman in one level and it was terrifying. He would warp behind you scream in an unholy voice, and scare the shit out of you only to teleport away. Soon he would do this again, and again and again, till you got to the church the thing was seen at, and then you were supposed to kill it with magical weapons there, which were first given out in that church.
This idea was cut, because I actually recreated it in one version of onslaight and it was too scary for me to handle so I never actually brought it back in any version.. This level was soon followed by a haunted castle level where you fought evil ghosts with magical weapons… That idea was less fleshed out but it was supposed to be there as well..
Soon RPG elements were added into Onslaught. One in particular was something I called “Kickass”. Now for the life of me, I cannot remember what the hell Kickass actually did now, but it it was something you could use to update your character or improve him. Bastard was now an upgradeable character like in RPG’s. This feature made it into the second to last rendition of Onslaught, but was scrapped in the final version.
From 2000 to 2002 I added in Tons of new monster and weapon ideas to onslaught’s design document. These are all lost to the abyss of time now, I don’t remember any of these minus a few. But at least 150 enemies were supposed to be in this game at this point..
Three of these enemies stick out:
The Fear Elemental is the first of these three. It is a particularly scary mutant that shows up in Europe sometimes. It had multiple eyes and mouths, something eerily reminiscent of the Shoggoth in At the Mountains of Madness by HP Lovecraft. But back then I never read Lovecraft so I would not know about the shoggoth. Later on the fear elemental was remade as a flaming horned thing that shot powerful projectiles. The old Fear elemental is gone forever…
Hitman213 thought of a very cool mutant idea one day while we were driving. It was a mutant that could take the form of any other mutant. It started as a silhuette of a human and in the process changed into a random mutant and got it’s health, model and attacks… This thing was soon given a name : The Chimera.
Another idea from that time that was fascinating was a super human bot found in the final chapter somewhere. I don’t have much info on this idea anymore, but it was supposed to be a robot with Insane AI. That’s all I know. AI was something Onslaught never really had but this was it’s one exception.
